SEFER ve SEFEL
To the End of the Land

Summer Book Group

When I first lived in Jerusalem in the 1980’s, before I knew Hebrew, my favorite place was a used English bookstore called “Sefer ve Sefel,” which is Hebrew for “Book and a Mug.”   We would pick out books, sit and get coffee and ice cream and read for hours with the other “Anglos.”

This summer,   I am excited to launch our own Sefer vs Sefel Summer Book Groups at Temple Sinai. The discussions will be primarily in person, but you can join by ZOOM, particularly if you are out of town.

TO THE END OF THE LAND  David Grossman (Hebrew Title: A Woman Runs from the News)   This has been hailed by critics (and my friends) as perhaps the greatest literary novel Israel has produced.  It is deeply character-driven and deals with the land as a metaphor for renewal and escape from the world.  The author is one of Israel’s leading writers, who lost his son in war while he was writing this novel.  The novel is a meditation of love, generational trauma, escape, and the complications of the human condition.
